Training Is Risk Mitigation
Most failures in distilling are process failures, not equipment failures. Poor fermentation monitoring leads to inconsistent yields. Incorrect cuts compromise product quality. Compliance misunderstandings create legal exposure.
Training addresses these risks directly. It reduces yield discrepancies through proper measurement and monitoring. It prevents costly mistakes during distillation runs. It ensures operators understand regulatory frameworks before problems arise.
Overconfidence is a hidden cost. Experience without structured understanding often leads to assumption-based decisions. Those assumptions result in batch losses, inefficiency, or safety issues.
Training is cost avoidance. Every prevented batch failure, every avoided compliance issue, every operational mistake that never happens.
The real question is not whether you can afford training, but whether you can afford operating without it.

Frequently asked questions
The production of spirits in South Africa is regulated under the Customs and Excise Act and administered by the South African Revenue Service (SARS).
Distilling spirits without the appropriate licensing is generally prohibited. Licensing requirements apply to both commercial production and, in most cases, small-scale production of spirits.
Regulations can change and may vary depending on your intended scale and purpose. We strongly recommend consulting:
- The South African Revenue Service (SARS)
- A liquor licensing specialist
- An attorney experienced in alcohol and excise law
Our training provides technical education. It does not replace legal or regulatory advice.
No. Commercial production and sale of spirits in South Africa requires appropriate licensing and regulatory approval.
This typically includes:
- Registration with SARS for excise purposes
- A manufacturing license
- Zoning approval from your local municipality
- Compliance with health, safety and environmental standards
- Proper business registration
Selling spirits without proper licensing carries serious legal consequences. Our training introduces regulatory awareness, but you must work with qualified legal and compliance professionals before starting any commercial operation.
No. Our training programs are structured to support complete beginners as well as those with prior exposure who want deeper technical understanding.
We begin with fundamentals and build progressively. No prior distilling experience is required — but seriousness and willingness to learn are.
Online training:
- Structured remote learning
- Self-paced progression
- Focus on theory, process control and technical clarity
- Accessible from anywhere
Classroom training:
- Hands-on practical instruction
- Live fermentation and distillation exercises
- Direct instructor guidance
- Real-time troubleshooting and feedback
Online builds structured understanding. Classroom builds applied competence.
Course content varies by program, but may include:
- Structured theory on fermentation and distillation principles
- Process control fundamentals
- Equipment overview and operational considerations
- Quality and yield awareness
- Regulatory and compliance orientation
Classroom courses also include hands-on distillation practice, equipment use, and samples to evaluate.
Time commitment varies by course format:
- Online courses: Completion time depends on your learning speed and engagement. Depending on the course, you'd have 3 - 6 month's access that can be extended.
- Classroom courses: Typically run as scheduled sessions (e.g. single-day or multi-day intensives).
We recommend allocating additional time for practice and review after training. Mastery requires application.
Certificates are not included in all courses.
For qualifying programs (such as C10), certification is included in the course fee.
For other programs, students may purchase a certificate of attendance after completing the course.
Certificates confirm participation in training. They do not constitute a license to manufacture or sell alcohol.
Our training provides the technical foundation you'll need, but starting a commercial operation requires additional structured planning, including:
- Regulatory and excise compliance
- Zoning approval
- Infrastructure planning (water, waste, power, safety)
- EBusiness and financial modelling
- Equipment specification aligned to capacity goals
We offer structured feasibility consultations to help prospective commercial operators assess readiness before investing in equipment.
Training is preparation — not the final step.
We are available to support our students after training.
If you need clarification, guidance or reassurance while applying what you've learned, you're welcome to contact us:
- Email us with your questions
- Call to discuss a specific issue
- Book a consultation and come in to work through it with us
We understand that applying new knowledge often raises additional questions. Our goal is to help you move forward with clarity and confidence.
For more complex technical guidance or commercial planning, structured consultation sessions can be arranged separately.
You are not left on your own after training — but support is most effective when it is focused and purposeful.
