Mead Mule Recipe
Kristi van der Riet
Take your taste buds on a refreshing journey with the Mead Mule, a South African-inspired twist on the classic Moscow Mule. With the natural sweetness of mead, the zesty tang of lime, and the spicy warmth of ginger beer, this cocktail is a perfect balance of flavours and a great way to celebrate our local honey heritage.
Ingredients
- 100 ml mead (opt for a South African mead like Fynbos or Orange Blossom to bring out unique, local flavours)
- 150 ml ginger beer (choose a quality craft ginger beer for a bold, authentic taste)
- 15 ml fresh lime juice (about half a medium lime)
- Ice cubes
- Lime wedges and fresh mint leaves for garnish
Instructions
- Start by filling a copper mug or sturdy glass with plenty of ice cubes to keep your drink perfectly chilled.
- Pour the mead into the mug, followed by the ginger beer and fresh lime juice. The combination of sweet, tart, and spicy flavours will create a delightful aroma as they mix.
- Gently stir the ingredients to combine, ensuring the flavours blend evenly without losing carbonation from the ginger beer.
- Garnish with a lime wedge for an extra citrusy pop and a sprig of fresh mint to add a refreshing herbal touch.
- Serve immediately and sip on your Mead Mule, basking in its unique fusion of traditional and modern elements.
Serving Suggestions
This cocktail is perfect for summer braais, cocktail evenings, or as a celebratory drink during mead-making workshops. Pair it with light, fresh snacks like biltong or a citrusy salad to enhance the flavours.
Tip:
Experiment with different types of mead, like Eucalyptus or Sunflower-based meads, to give your Mead Mule a unique South African character. Each variety will bring its own twist to this classic cocktail. Cheers to honey, heritage, and innovation!
