Material Handling

One of the challenges in a Commercial Distillery or Craft Distillery that is often overlooked when choosing Distilling Equipment and Distillery Equipment, is that of Material Handling. 

What type of Material Handling happens inside a Distillery?

There is a very long list of Materials we can discuss here, so let us break it down to various categories:

1. Liquids. Included here are various types of liquids, from ethanol to heads and tails, to water, to stillage, to chemicals, to fermentations, etc. Depending on the Liquid type, the equipment (Pumps and Pipes) specified should therefore be able to handle different Temperatures, pH's, ABV%'s, Viscosity's, and even sometimes solids within the liquid.
2. Solid Waste. Solid Waste can range from Packaging Waste to Raw Material Waste to Sediment. Each requiring a different solution for transport, storage, and handling.
3. Consumables. Depending on the type of Consumable in question, the Distiller might require it to be off-loaded off trucks, moved around the Distillery Floor, raised to higher levels, stacked, etc. Considering some of these consumables might be on Pallets taking up a meter cubed, and weighing more than a tonne, having the proper equipment available (and planning the Distillery properly) becomes vitally important.
4. Final Products and Equipment. Even the simplest and most obvious requirements are sometimes overlooked - moving the final product from one place to another, or even simply offloading your Distillery Equipment when it arrives.
